ADULT CRITICAL CARE SERVICES
Trauma Intensive Care Unit - Diamond 2 West
With 20 critical care beds, this adult unit focuses primarily on patients who have experienced critical traumatic injury.
Medical Intensive Care Unit - Diamond 3 West
With 20 critical-care beds, this unit provides family centered care to critically ill pulmonary, medical and neurology patients. Staff utilizes a supportive and collaborative approach to interactions with patients and their families.
Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit - 4 NW
A 20-bed Cardiovascular ICU. The major focus is on treatment of complex cardiac disease. As a regional referral center we receive patients for heart transplant evaluation, post-op open-heart surgery, heart and lung transplants, pre- and post-op artificial heart and ventricular assist devices, as well as a variety of cardiac and vascular diagnoses.

Adult specialties include the CVICU, Medical ICU and Trauma/Surgical ICU. Special effort and dedication without exception are some of the characteristics that make us distinctive team members in the field of critical care. ADULT HEALTH SERVICES
Trauma Intermediate Care Unit - Diamond 2 North
A 24-bed adult unit specializing in trauma intermediate care. The staff is educated to care for arterial lines, open wounds, multiple drains, and multiple drips.
Clinical Decision Unit
A 16-bed telemetry unit designed to observe patients who require 8 to 24 hours of testing, treatment or cardiac monitoring and observation.
Orthopaedics Unit - Diamond 3 North
D3N is a 24-bed unit specializing in the care of orthopaedic patients. We provide family centered care to our patient population.
Adult Medical/Surgical Specialties Unit - 3 NE
A 30-bed Adult Medical/Surgical Specialty Unit, which provides general medical and surgical care to adult and geriatric patient populations. The main services that admit patients to 3 NE are Internal Medicine and Family Practice. This unit offers medical patients with multiple diagnosis, which provide for a wide variety of experiences.
Oncology/Hematology/Bone Marrow Transplant Unit - 3 NW
A 29-bed unit, which consists of 21 bone marrow transplant rooms for pediatric and adult BMT patients and 8 hematology/oncology rooms. The majority of patients have solid tumors or hematological cancer. Bone marrow patients include Hodgkin's, non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, leukemia, and certain solid tumors such as breast cancer. The specialized nursing care required for our patients helps create the autonomy, professionalism and collaboration that exists with our multidisciplinary team. There is always opportunity for learning the latest trends in the science of nursing and medicine while perfecting the art of caring for our very special patient population.
Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit - 4 NE
A 30-bed Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit. The patients treated include post open heart; post heart transplant, patients awaiting heart transplant, acute myocardial infarctions, congestive heart failure and patients directly from the Cardiac Cath Lab following angioplasty and stents. Most patients are on telemetry monitoring. The unit also cares for patients on artificial heart and ventricular assist devices.
Cardiovascular Intermediate Care Unit - 4 West
A 28-bed unit which focuses on the care of vascular patients and patients on artificial heart and ventricular assist devices. In addition, the unit cares for patients with cardiac arrhythmias, acute myocardial infarctions, and pre-heart transplant especially those with congestive heart failure.
Neurology/Neurosurgery Unit - 6 East
A 28-bed adult medical/surgical unit specializing in Neurology and Neurosurgery patients. It is the primary medical/surgical unit for University Medical Center's Stroke Center. It has the capability of monitoring remote cardiac telemetry and also houses the "Arizona Comprehensive Epilepsy Program" providing 24-hour inpatient seizure monitoring for patients throughout the Southwest.
Discharge Lounge
A 6-lounge chair unit that is open from 6:30 am to 8:00 pm for discharged patients waiting for a ride home. It is designed for patients who are primarily self care.
Intermediate Care Transplant/Surgical Specialty Unit - 7 West
A 28-bed adult intermediate care unit specializing in transplants, general surgery, and women's surgical service. This unit cares for patients transferred from the intensive care unit, patients with surgical interventions, and transplants. The staff is educated to care for open wounds, multiple drains and multiple drips.
Psychiatry Unit - 2 East
An 8-bed psychiatric locked unit, which evaluates and treats adults with major psychiatric disorders. The unit uses a comprehensive biopsychosocial model of care. It provides for supportive medical care in conjunction with primary psychiatric treatment. The RN staff practice nursing with a self-care model, which focuses on the strengths and individuality of each patient. Patients here are voluntary admissions.
Intermediate Care/Medical/Surgical Resource Pool
A pool of very unique people who care for adult epilepsy/ortho/neuro, intermediate care units, cardiac telemetry, surgery, medical and oncology/BMT patients. This Resource Pool offers the opportunity to care for a diverse range of patients.
WOMEN & CHILDREN'S SERVICES
Pediatric Medical/Surgical Unit - Diamond 5
A 36-bed unit providing care for patients from infants to 18 years of age. Medical specialties include cardiology, orthopedics, neurology, gastroenterology, trauma, endocrinology, nephrology pediatric pulmonary, transplantation and general pediatrics. A child advocacy, multidisciplinary approach enables the staff to best serve the patients and families.
Pediatric Oncology/Hematology/Bone Marrow Transplant Unit - Diamond 6 West
A 14-private room unit for children and adolescents with blood disorders or cancers, and 6 private rooms dedicated to Southern Arizona's only inpatient Bone Marrow Transplant program. Patients and families benefit from staff's commitment to child health, hope and wholeness.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit - Diamond 6 North
A 24-bed critical care unit providing care for infants, children and young adults. Medical specialties include cardiology and cardio-thoracic surgery, general surgery, trauma, orthopedics, hematology, oncology, neurology, neurosurgery, pediatric pulmonary and nephrology, transplantation and general pediatrics. Staff is PALS certified. It is a challenging and rewarding unit.
Antepartum/Postpartum Unit - 7 East
A 26-bed unit that reflects our philosophy of family centered care. Patient and family members' learning is supported by our interdisciplinary service team members. We provide physical, emotional and educational support to all patients who require early hospitalization. We care for a minor population of GYN patients with a variety of complex surgeries; it offers great opportunities for learning and keeping up with medical/surgical skills.
Newborn Nursery Unit - 7 Central
There are 30 bassinets and 6 transitional care warmers for healthy, full term infants. Our staff is dedicated to family centered care, providing early parenting and infant classes as well as lactation consultation.
Labor and Delivery Unit - 8 East
The L&D unit is a high-risk tertiary care center with thousands of deliveries each year. There are 13 LDR rooms, 3 operating rooms and 5 observation beds in the department. Our philosophy of care is a focus towards a family centered maternity experience. The 4-bed OB/GYN Post Anesthesia Care Unit cares for both preoperative and postoperative needs of our patients.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - Diamond 4 North
A 36-bed NICU where our highly skilled staff cares for premature infants, those with heart defects and surgical problems. It is a quiet atmosphere attuned to developmental aspects of caring for the premature infant. Parent support groups, teaching and participation in care is encouraged. Staffing is done based on acuity as well as census.
Women and Children's Resource Pool
Specialties include general pediatric units, newborn nursery, pediatric ICU and neonatal ICU. This resource pool offers the opportunity to care for neonatal and pediatric patients and their families.
PERIOPERATIVE SERVICES
Ambulatory Surgery
This 16-bed unit provides care for outpatient surgery and special procedure patients. Ambulatory Surgery staff provide care in the Pre-Anesthesia Clinic, Pre-op Ready Room and Same-Day Surgery areas.
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
This 15-bed unit provides post anesthesia care to surgical patients as well as those requiring anesthesia for endoscopy, cardiac catheterization, interventional radiology and testing procedures. The PACU is staffed 24 hours/7 days per week.
Operating Room
16 operating suites are part of UMC's Level 1 Trauma Center. Surgical specialties include cardiac, neuro, steriotactic, total joint replacement and transplants. UMC is the regional transplant center for heart and lung transplantation. Liver, and kidney transplants are also part of the transplant service. Three outpatient units are part of the 16 suites. The OR is staffed 24 hours/7 days per week.
EMERGENCY/TRAUMA SERVICES
Emergency Department
This is a fast paced 61-bed ED designed into 4 Pods with Level 1 Trauma, and a Children's ED. We care for the entire life span. Combined volume is approximately 65,000 visits per year.
HOME HEALTH SERVICES
A variety of home care services are provided including skilled nursing, rehabilitation therapies, and home infusion services. We serve the adult, pediatric and maternal/child community. Home health RNs provide hands on care and teaching in wound care, IV therapies, TPN, pain control, antibiotics, blood transfusions, enteral feedings and skilled assessments. From the home setting, the Home Health RN can provide valuable feedback regarding patient stability and response to the prescribed treatments. These services have opportunities for registered nurses that possess the skills to practice professional nursing with increased autonomy and accountability.
