UMC Foundation

MISSION STATEMENT

The University Medical Center Foundation is committed to developing ongoing philanthropic support for University Medical Center (UMC) as it fulfills its vital mission of providing patient care, education of healthcare professionals, research, and community service to Arizona and the Southwest. That commitment relies upon the support of appreciative individuals, organizations, and institutions in order to maintain the high standards and innovative programs for which UMC is known and respected.

HISTORY AND GOVERNANCE

The UMC Foundation was established in November of 2000. Today it is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of ten members. Reflecting the statewide reach and impact of UMC, these individuals come from across the state of Arizona.

TAX DEDUCTIBILITY

UMC is designated a 501 (c) (3) “not for profit” public hospital serving the entire State of Arizona and the Southwest. This designation means that private gifts in support of UMC’s bricks-and-mortar projects and patient-related programs are tax-deductible.

WHY UMC MERITS PHILANTHROPIC SUPPORT

• For many years, UMC has been ranked among the top hospitals in the U.S. in EIGHT OR MORE of the 16 areas of specialty medical care. (U.S.News & World Report’s guide to “America’s best Hospitals.”)

• Of the 5,189 medical centers evaluated by U.S.News & World Report, only 176 were ranked in ANY of the 16 medical specialties measured.

• UMC is designated a “MAGNET HOSPITAL” for the quality of its nursing care, ONE OF LESS THAN 100 out of the many thousands of hospitals evaluated. It is the first hospital in Arizona to be so honored. (American Nurses Credential Center.)

• Although UMC has the highest bed-occupancy rate in Tucson, its nurse-to-patient ratio of 1-to-4 is the lowest in the state and one of the lowest in America.

• UMC provides THE ONLY “LEVEL I” TRAUMA CENTER in Southern Arizona, which means that it meets stringent requirements to provide broad, specialized care, with a full trauma team available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

• As an ACADEMIC MEDICAL CENTER, UMC engages in “bench to bedside” medical care, both designing AND delivering protocols to patients.

IMPORTANCE OF CHARITABLE ASSISTANCE

Over the years, charitable giving has become indispensable to UMC, and especially to its five “Pillars of Care:” Cancer, Cardiology, Pediatrics, Trauma/Emergency Department and Transplantation. Indeed, several major new buildings and many patient-care advances have been made possible in these vital areas by philanthropic support.

Today, charitable assistance is more important to UMC than ever before. In order to maintain its lofty standards of care while responding to a steadily-increasing patient demand, and to continue to incorporate cutting-edge new treatments and techniques — IN OTHER WORDS, TO CONTINUE BEING THE INVALUABLE COMMUNITY ASSET THAT IT HAS BECOME — UMC must rely greatly upon support from those who value its extraordinary services.
